Grease is the word. Do I have oily skin? Dry? Combination?

Grease is the word. Do I have oily skin? Dry? Combination?

Dear Skincare Fiend,

I think I'm a pretty clean person.  And at times, my skin feels dry and tight.  But then sometimes I feel like the Exxon Valdez has just dumped it's load directly onto my face pores.  Do I have dry skin?  Oily skin?  How do I even know?

Sincerely, Greased Lightning.

Dear Greased Lightning,

In my experience few people have truly oily skin.  True oily skin will be super shiny about a half an hour after cleansing it... like makeup will slide around when you try to apply it.

Here's my basic routine for oily skin:

  1. Start with PCASkin Facial Wash Oily/Problem Skin
  2. Then apply PCASkin Nutrient Toner
  3. Finish with PCASkin Hydrating Serum

If you have dry skin, you can’t even stand the way your skin feels tight after you cleanse it.  You must, I say, MUST put moisturizer on immediately after cleansing.  Tightness is a great indicator you have gone to the dry side.

My basic routine for dry skin:

  1. Start with Essance Revitalizing Facial Cleanser
  2. Then apply PCASkin Hydrating Toner
  3. Finish with Essance Revitalizing Facial Moisturizer

You have combination skin when your cheek areas are normal or dry and your T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) is normal or oily.  You have two different skin types on your face, which, thankfully is not the same as being two-faced.  That problem is much harder to solve.

My basic routine for combination skin:

  1. Start with Essance Revitalizing Facial Cleanser
  2. Then apply PCASkin Nutrient Toner
  3. Finish with Essence Dragon’s Blood Moisturizer

Dear Skincare Fiend,  I'm so confused.  I mean, I don't want to feel dirty, but won't soap dry my skin?  Am I condemned to a life of dewey filth?  Please help me understand

  1. IF i should wash my face?
  2. WHEN I should wash my face?
  3. WHAT can i use for clean skin that won't leave it as dry as the Bonneville Salt Flats?

Dear Confused,

I'm so glad you asked.  Great news!  There's no Sophie's Choice here.  You can (and should) have clean, dewey, glistening skin, whether you're in a rainforest, or the aforementioned Salt Flats.  Here's the trick...<add expert advice> link to a page of products that cleanse without drying
